Official and explicit recognition from UEFA regarding Alvarez’s cancelled penalty against Real Madrid

UEFA has issued an official statement regarding Julian Alvarez’s penalty kick, which was overturned by video technology in the Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid match in the Champions League round of 16, which paved the way for the Whites to win and qualify.

Although he admitted that Alvarez touched the ball twice, he admitted that this law needs to be changed and that he will discuss his violation with FIFA.

The statement was as follows:

Atletico Madrid have inquired with UEFA regarding the incident that led to Julian Alvarez’s penalty being disallowed at the end of yesterday’s Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Despite its small size, the player touched the ball with his standing foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) should have informed the referee that the goal was disallowed.

UEFA will enter into discussions with FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional.
