Flick rejects signing of one of the Premier League’s biggest stars

It’s becoming increasingly clear that FC Barcelona is entering a new era of renewal, guided by a clear vision from new head coach Hansi Flick. Since his appointment, Flick has emphasized a long-term project focused on rejuvenating the squad and building around promising young talents already within the club.

Names like Gavi, Pedri, Fermín López, and Dani Olmo represent the core of this future-focused approach. With such a direction, the club is showing little interest in signing aging stars, even those with strong resumes and vast experience.

In this context, it was no surprise that the name of Portuguese star Bernardo Silva surfaced once again—something that has become common during recent transfer windows. The Manchester City midfielder, considered one of the club’s key figures in recent years, was reportedly offered to Barcelona in hopes of a fresh start. However, this time, the response from Camp Nou was firm: he is not part of Flick’s plans.

While the German coach acknowledges Bernardo’s technical quality, he believes the player’s best days are behind him. After an inconsistent season plagued by injuries and reduced involvement under Pep Guardiola, Bernardo no longer fits into the profile Barcelona is pursuing.

Moreover, the creative midfield role is already well-covered with the return of Gavi, the addition of Dani Olmo, and the emergence of Fermín López. From a financial standpoint, signing a player with a high salary could disrupt the club’s wage structure—something Barcelona is keen to avoid.

With the Barcelona door effectively closed, all signs now point toward a move to Saudi Arabia, where clubs like Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr have expressed serious interest and are reportedly preparing big-money offers.

Back in Barcelona, the focus has shifted to bolstering the defense—particularly the right-back and center-back positions amid uncertainty surrounding Ronald Araújo’s future. The club is also exploring options for a left-wing attacker, with plans to sign a pure striker delayed until 2026, when Robert Lewandowski’s contract expires.

While Bernardo Silva was considered a top target just a year ago, priorities have changed. Flick has made it clear: Barcelona’s future lies in youth, energy, and fresh ambition—not in big names whose peak years are behind them.

It’s a bold decision—and one that marks the beginning of a new chapter at Camp Nou.
